My mother is Anne Shields, born in Pittsfield, MA in 1935. Her parents were Mary Fenwick b. 1915 in Pittsfield, MA, and Edward Shields b. 1905 in Lenox, MA. The family is mostly Irish, with an English and French Canadian line mixed in.
These are describe the family origins. Some of these documents are a bit old, contact me for more recent info.

Stout & Woodson (paternal line)

My father is Leo Ray Stout, born in Fink Creek, WV in 1935. His parents were Mary Woodson, b. 1905 in Copley, WV, and Jesse Stout, b. 1898 in Finks Creek. The family has very early settlers – the Woodson line arrived in Jamestown VA in 1619, and the Stouts settled first on Long Island in the 1640s, then were among the first settlers of New Jersey. There are many Stouts in the US. This branch moved to West Virginia in the late 1700s.

Geoff Arnold Family

My partner, Geoff Arnold, has some interesting ancestor

My Short Century by Lorna Arnold

Geoff’s mother, Lorna Arnold, had a fascinating life, including serving as a British Nuclear Historian. Her memoir My Short Century is available on Amazon.

Another of Geoff’s ancestors, John Steele of Scotland, was an early educator in the Mechanics’ Institute movement. He helped establish schools for men working in mills and factories in Glasgow, Aberdeen, and New York City in the 1820s and 30s. I’ve recently finished a book about him, John Steele & Family.
